17-year old Johnny-Lee to complete HSC during Lebanon’s World Cup Nines Camp
Mon 14 October 2019
At 18 years of age, Johnny-Lee Gabrael will head into Lebanon camp for the Rugby League World Cup Nines (RLWC9s) the same week he sits his Higher School Certificate.
Johnny-Lee Gabrael is a Year 12 student at Holy Cross College Ryde, who is set to begin his HSC later this week as well head into Lebanon camp ahead of the upcoming World Cup Nines. He will be looking to make his International debut in the halves.
On Tuesday the Lebanon squad will assemble in camp, to prepare for their games at Bankwest Stadium on October 18 and 19 against France, England and Wales.
Gabrael admits it will be a tough week, but through determination and commitment believes he will successfully complete both to the best of his ability.
“It’s going to be a tough week, trying to manage both my HSC and training but I’m confident I’ll manage both,” Gabrael said.
The Higher School Certificate is the highest educational award in New South Wales schools, where you can optionally choose to receive an ATAR. Your ATAR determines a strong foundation for students wishing to pursue tertiary qualifications, training or employment.
The HSC is important especially for this year 12 student, as he wishes to get into university to study Law. This requires an ATAR of 97 (out of 100).
“I aspire to be a lawyer and will try my best to get the mark as I need a 97 ATAR.”
He feels privileged to pull on the Lebanon jersey and is happy to make the sacrifice to have the opportunity to compete in the World Cup 9s.
“It was initial shock, and a surreal feeling to be selected. I’m proud to pull on Lebanon jersey and make my family proud.”
Gabrael has had a big year managing his school vice-captain commitments, captaining his school and Club side.
Brothers Joshua Rizk (2018) and Adam Rizk (2016) who also attended Holy Cross College Ryde, have also been named in the Lebanon squad for the RLWC9s.
